Breakfast on Radio York - will you be taking your holidays? - 18-04-2008

Abeceder managing director Michael Millward, joined the Breakfast Crew on BBC Radio York this morning to discuss a new report from travel firm Expedia which says that one in four Britons will cancel a holiday this year because of "severe" pressures at work, and one in seven people will take work on holiday with them, making use of mobile technology to check emails and voice mails.

Mr Millward admitted that while he now ensures that he takes all his holidays, in the past he like many Britons regularly had holiday entitlement left at the end of the year. But this according to the report is typical of the British who are more likely than other Europeans to forego holiday entitlement.

I liked saving up holiday entitlement for a big holiday, says Mr Millward, but I am aware that many people don’t take their holidays because of pressures at work, and unfortunately some bosses do try to dissuade their employees from taking a holiday.

One in twenty people are also trying to beat the credit crunch by selling unwanted holidays back to their employers in exchange for extra cash, or other benefits.

Alison Couper, communications director of Expedia.co.uk, said:

"Getting your work-life balance just right is sometimes difficult due to work pressures, but it is very important to ensure that you give yourself enough time to recharge your batteries and switch off from the working environment."

Michael Millward agrees but says:

"This is not simply a lifestyle issue. For businesses tired overworked employees are a liability, they are more likely to make mistakes and have accidents that will end up costing the business money".

"Employees are entitled to their holidays, and should be encouraged to take them at times that fit around the needs of the business. There is no point an accountant allowing staff to have holidays the week before year end, but generally speaking a business that can not survive without an individual employee for a couple of weeks is being badly managed."

Despite all the legislation and encouragement from managers some employees will never take their holiday entitlement, seeing it as a badge of honour, proof that they are indispensable, and a fast track to promotion. The reality says Mr Millward is that at the end of the day we are all dispensable, the cemeteries are full of people who thought differently.
