Michael Millward joins NSPCC Business Group for Leeds - 01-10-2007
Abeceder managing director Michael Millward has accepted an invitation to join the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) Leeds Business Group.

The aim of the NSPCC is to create a society where all children are loved, valued and able to fulfil their potential. The eight business groups across the UK aim is to assist the charity by organising events and other initiatives that reach out to the business community, build awareness of its work, attract new supporters and of course raise funds.

Jacquie Cross regional corporate fund-raising manager for the NSPCC described the eight individuals who make up the management committee for the business group and the businesses they represent as key players in the West Yorkshire business community. Welcoming Mr Millwards acceptance of the invitation to join the committee Ms Cross said that she hoped and expected that he would bring the same energy and dynamism to the group that had created the success enjoyed by Abeceder.

Mr Millward, admitted to being surprised when he was first invited to join the committee, but also very proud that Abeceder had been selected to be invited.

This is not an invitation for me as an individual, but an invitation for the whole of the Abeceder team. It is recognition of the hard work every member of the team has put in to building the reputation for which Abeceder has become known. I will be proud to represent the Abeceder team and support the work of the NSPCC.

In the short time I have been involved with the NSPCC I have learnt just how lucky I was to grow up in a loving home.

Over 80% of children between the ages of 11 and 16 described violence as a major problem for children, with 40% seeing it as just another part of growing up.

Over half a million children will witness domestic violence every year

1 in 6 children will be sexually abused

Each day 650 West Yorkshire children who are in distress and with no where else to turn telephone Childline the free telephone service that is the biggest service provided by the NSPCC.

Michael expressed shock when he learnt that because of a lack of funds and trained volunteers 280 of these pleas for help go unanswered every day. "West Yorkshire", he said, "is a fantastic place to live and to work, but despite all of the success the region has enjoyed over recent years I am very disappointed that we are still unable to offer protection to the most vunerable members of our community."
