Work Retune a guide to senior level flexible working - 07-07-2008

A web tool designed to help senior professionals and their managers. Work Re-tune is an interactive website which has been written using the expertise of Working Families and Sapphire Partners and which is supported by the government’s Quality part-time work fund.

Work Re-tune is designed to help senior employees and their employers to understand, negotiate and, where possible, implement more flexibility in their roles. There are two “views”, one for employees and one for managers. The views include advice on types of flexible arrangement, negotiation and implementation, rights and responsibilities, the legal position and case studies. Users work through a series of questions which help them to assess opportunities, barriers and concerns, both personal and professional, when considering a change to their work patterns.

Barbara Follett, Deputy Minister for Women and Equalities said:

“Flexible working allows people to make real choices in their work and family life. There are already 14 million people working flexibly in the United Kingdom and we expect an extra 4.5 million to do so after the Government’s recent announcement that the right to request will be extended to parents with children up to the age of 16.

“But, it is not just a one way street. Businesses, of all sizes, are reaping the benefits of flexible working. It helps them to attract and retain excellent workers who, thanks to the increased control they have over their time, are more productive which helps their employers stay ahead in an increasingly competitive global market.”

Sarah Jackson OBE, Chief Executive of Working Families said:

“This unique new resource challenges the myth that senior roles cannot be flexible. It helps both senior people and their employers to think afresh about how a role can be done differently. Successful flexible working at a senior level is a win for both the organisation and the employee”.

Kate Grussing, Managing Director of Sapphire Partners said:

“Achieving greater flexibility is the single most important challenge for senior professionals and world class employers who have so much invested in this phenomenal talent pool. More acceptance of flexible working is the easiest single way to tap into a huge resource of otherwise wasted talent, expertise and experience. Its importance cannot be overestimated”
